(Born in Yamagata, 1982. Lives and works in Kanagawa, Japan.)
The early career of Umetsu after he graduated from Department of Oil Painting, Fine Art, Tokyo Zokei Art University could be characterized by one of his paintings, Floréal (Me) (2012-2014), for which the artist appropriated a French painter Louis-Joseph-Raphaël Collin's painting, Floréal (1886) by replacing a naked female figure with himself. Umetsu presented a four-panel painting Wisdom, Impression, Sentiment - A (2014), inspired by Seiki Kuroda's signature painting Wisdom, Impression, Sentiment (1897‒1900). And he also announced the painting that are underlain Ferdinand Hodler's The Day (1900), that is masterpiece which is over 3 meter in width; The Day (Myself in the East) (2015). He has been searching for his own relation that is locating at development and end of Japanese modern art. From 2014, he established "Parplume" to live in between the history of Art education and Art movement. Parplume is a cram school where students criticize and consider about the existence of community with action through Art and education from the school, which established by Seiki Kuroda to Art universities in general.
